Exodus 14-17: Trapped, Fed, Tested โ€” Repeat

Picture this: You just escaped slavery. Your family is finally free. And then you look up and realize you're trapped โ€” sea in front, army behind, mountains blocking every other direction.

What would you do?

The Israelites panicked. "Were there no graves in Egypt?" they asked Moses. Basically: We're going to die here, and this is your fault.

Moses said something wild: "Stand still."

The chariots were coming. The army was real. And Moses said, "Stop moving. Wait. Watch."

The Sea Didn't Part Instantly

Here's what most movies get wrong: the sea didn't snap open like a door. Exodus 14:21 says the Lord sent a strong east wind that blew all night long before the waters parted.

All. Night.

Think about what that means. They were standing there in the dark, the Egyptian army getting closer, listening to the wind howl for hours. The miracle came โ€” but it came slowly. They had to wait for it.

Sometimes that's how it works. You're in crisis, you're praying, and the answer doesn't come immediately. It doesn't mean God isn't working. It might mean He's working in a way that requires you to trust longer than you wanted.

Walking Through

When morning came, the sea was divided. Walls of water on both sides. The ground was dry (or dry enough โ€” at first it must've been muddy). Israel walked through.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 10 that this was like baptism. Israel left Egypt behind. They walked through the water. They came out on the other side as a covenant people.

Here's the kicker: the Egyptians tried to follow, and they drowned. Whatever "Egypt" represents in your life โ€” the past you're leaving, the habits you're trying to break โ€” it cannot follow you through the water if you keep walking forward.

The Wilderness: Daily Bread

Freedom didn't mean comfort. A few weeks into the wilderness, the food ran out. People started saying, "At least we had bread in Egypt."

God's answer was manna โ€” a white flaky substance that showed up every morning. Gather what you need for today. If you hoarded it, it rotted overnight. On Friday, gather double because nothing would appear on the Sabbath.

The lesson: you can't stockpile blessings. You have to depend on God again tomorrow.

That's annoying, honestly. We want to pray once, feel good, and be set for the month. But spiritual life doesn't work that way. You wake up needing again. That's not a sign of weakness. That's the design.

Water from a Rock

Later, there was no water. At all. People were dying of thirst. Moses was so frustrated he went to God and said, "They're about to stone me."

God told him to strike a rock with his rod. Moses did โ€” and water came pouring out.

Paul says "that Rock was Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:4). The symbolism: Israel was dying because of their choices. Someone had to be struck. And Christ โ€” the rock โ€” absorbed the blow so that we could have living water.

That's the whole gospel, honestly, compressed into one desert scene.
