Moses Said: Let My People Go!

Pharaoh was the king of Egypt, and he wouldn't listen.

God told Moses to go to Pharaoh and say, "Let my people go!" But Pharaoh kept saying no. So God sent ten plagues to show Pharaoh that He was the most powerful of all.

The river turned to blood. Frogs jumped everywhere โ€” into beds, into ovens, into food bowls! Locusts ate all the crops. And for three whole days, there was darkness so thick you couldn't see your hand in front of your face.

Each time a plague came, Pharaoh would say, "Okay, okay, make it stop!" But every time Moses prayed and the plague stopped, Pharaoh changed his mind. He kept breaking his promise.

The Special Meal

For the last and most serious plague, God told the Israelites to do something very important. Each family should take a lamb, roast it, and put the lamb's blood on their door frame. Then God said the plague would "pass over" any house with blood on the door, and that family would be safe.

The Israelites did exactly what God said. And they were safe.

God also said to eat the meal quickly โ€” with bread made without yeast, and bitter herbs to remember the hard times. And He said: do this every year, so you never forget the night I saved you.

This special meal is called the Passover.

The Big Idea

God kept every promise He made. Pharaoh kept breaking his.

When we make a promise โ€” to God, to our parents, to a friend โ€” keeping it matters. That's one reason we take the sacrament every week. It's our way of saying: "I remember what Jesus did for me, and I'm going to keep my promise to follow Him."

Your Mission This Week: When you take the sacrament on Sunday, think about it like the Passover โ€” a promise that God will keep you safe if you follow Him. Tell someone in your family one thing you want to do to keep your promise to follow Jesus.

Family Activity: Act out the Passover meal together! Eat some crackers (unleavened bread) and talk about what it might have felt like for an Israelite child on that last night in Egypt, waiting and trusting that God would protect their family.
